The Charon class Frigate was deployed by Earthforce beginning in 2643 not long before the rise in tensions which would lead to the Second Earth Alliance Civil War began, With the war starting just a few months after the initial deployment of its Orion Class successor the Charon class was the most common frigate model in the fleets of both sides when the war began and hundreds would be destroyed during the conflict.

The Charon class Frigate was intended as a multi-role patrol and escort ship. It carried a standard crew of 300 and was 380 meters long, carrying 3 shuttles and 15 Starfuries in its hanger bay. For anti-ship weapons the Charon carried 2 Medium Fusion Beams, 6 Medium Pulse Particle Cannons, and 2 Medium Multi-role missile launchers while for point defense it carried 8 dual purpose Light fusion beam/Light Neutron Pulse cannon turrets.
